Dear Doug Letters

by Doug Banks Radio Show

Dear Doug,

I have an old college friend who is “ethnically ambiguous”…in other words, you can’t tell she is black.  She likes pretending to be anything but a black woman. She’s been white (died her hair blonde), Puertorican (with curly black hair), and now she’s Mexcian. (learned to speak fluent Spanish a few years ago). I ain’t hating, because in this day and age we can all afford to “pass” at times. Her looks have surely helped her numerous times on the job front.  BUT this time I’m a little bothered.  My husband and I have been out of work for a while. I recently went on an interview for a job, only to find out that my friend decided to interview for the same position. They were looking to hire a latina, and I’m Mexican.  Well, she got the job. I’m finding it truly hard to be happy for her considering she landed the job under false pretenses, and probably wouldn’t have known about the open position, had I not shared it with her.  I’m thinking of secretly sending a note to the hiring officer.  I’m torn.  How should I handle this?
Signed,
She Ain’t Who You Think
